6PM to 8PM

Join us on Saturday, June 15th, from 6 pm to 8 pm as Charlie's "Angels" hosts a special benefit to kick off Pride and support the Cameron Jesse Manito Scholarship. The event promises an evening of captivating performances by renowned dancers from Charlie's, Ballet Folklórico Patria Mexicana, and Mexica Tribe. This benefit aims to honor the legacy of Cameron Jesse, a dedicated advocate for LGBT students from rural areas.

Cameron Jesse and the Manito Scholarship

Cameron Jesse, a 25-year-old gay transfer student from Colorado Springs, enrolled at MSU Denver in the fall of 2022 with a mission to make a difference. He was a staunch advocate for LGBT students from rural areas who often lack the support services available in larger cities. As a member of the MSU Denver Journey Through Our Heritage program, Cameron collaborated to create the Manito Scholarship. This first-of-its-kind scholarship is dedicated to advocates of the LGBT community with an interest in Southern Colorado’s Manito culture.

Cameron's inspiration for the scholarship stemmed from his own heritage and the experiences of Joanna Lucero's family, pioneers in Denver’s gay community since the 1940s. Through meticulous research and interviews with renowned Lesbian archivist Katie Gilmartin, Cameron laid a solid foundation for the scholarship. Tragically, Cameron passed away in September 2023 before the scholarship was finalized. In honor of his efforts and legacy, the scholarship was renamed to include his name.

Charlie's and the Community Effort

Charlie's management was deeply moved by Cameron Jesse’s dedication to creating the Manito Scholarship. They generously offered their venue, dancers, and additional resources to kick-start the scholarship fund. Matty Peters, head of entertainment at Charlie's, emphasized their commitment to giving back to the community and supporting Cameron’s mission.

Cameron’s short life and his efforts to help others celebrate their history and heritage with pride will not be forgotten, thanks to the support of Charlie's and MSU Denver. In March 2024, the MSU Denver Board of Trustees voted to award Cameron Jesse a posthumous degree. Charlie's, continuing the legacy of founder John King, has raised millions of dollars over the years to support numerous charitable causes, ensuring that Cameron's vision lives on.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information, please text 720-329-0869 or email
